Using Non-Verbal Communication
Using non-verbal communication is like speaking without saying a word—and it’s often more powerful than what we actually say out loud. Facial expressions, eye contact, gestures, posture, and even tone of voice all send messages that can support (or sabotage) what we’re trying to communicate.
In a homeschool setting, a warm smile can encourage a hesitant learner, while crossed arms or a raised eyebrow might signal disapproval without a single word. Being aware of our non-verbal cues helps us create a welcoming, emotionally safe environment, and it also teaches students to read social cues and respond with empathy. After all, sometimes it’s not what you say—it’s how you look while saying it.
